Planning a move, whether local or long-distance, can be both stressful and pricey. From day one, you’ve got so much to consider and the expenses associated with moving can easily add up. Luckily, there are a few strategies you can employ to save money and make your move easier. Check out our simple tips below to streamline your move:
Pack Your Own Belongings
One of the best ways to save on your next move is packing up your own belongings. Many moving companies charge additional fees for packing up your home for you. Instead of paying the high fees, you can do it yourself and reduce your costs. Enlist the help of your family members, and cut the workload of packing. You can even order some pizza and reward your friends and family by turning packing time into a moving party.
Locate Free Boxes & Newspapers
Instead of spending the extra money to buy boxes and newspaper, try locating them for free! When you buy extra packing supplies from the post office, office supply store or a moving company, you’re in for some major added costs. Instead, check your local grocery store, department store or ask friends and family for old boxes and newspaper lying around.
Using newspaper is also a great way to save money on bubble wrap, which can be expensive. It works just as well, and can help protect your valuables such as dishware, ceramic cups and other fragile items.
Reduce Your Total Load
Another great way to enjoy some savings when you move is to reduce the total amount of items you’re moving. If you know your next space will be smaller, it’s a great idea to giveaway or donate anything you don’t need. Even if your next space will be larger, it can be helpful and help you save money to give away furniture or belongings that you don’t need. This is probably the single best way to reduce your total moving costs. Be sure to check your local Goodwill or thrift store to see if they offer a free donation pick-up service – many do!
Ask For a Tax Rebate
Another helpful way to save on moving is to apply for a tax rebate. According to Publication 521 of the IRS, you can deduct your moving expenses in certain circumstances. For example:
Your new job location is at least 50 miles farther from your new address than it was from your old address.
Your move occurred within one year from the date you started to work in your location.
You have worked full-time for at least 39 weeks during the 12 months after moving to your new address if you an employee.
