Happy Earth Day 2019! Since 1970, Earth Day has raised awareness of sustainable, healthy practices for the home we all share – Planet Earth. Earth Day reminds us each year that we can make a difference working together. There are many ways to make an impact and have a good time in Tucson.

    Plant A Tree

There’s a Chinese proverb that says, “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” This Earth Day, find a place to plant a tree in Tucson! Trees offer many benefits: they provide fresh oxygen, habitats for wildlife, nice spaces in our city, and even lower cooling costs for your home in the summer. If you can’t plant a tree, you can donate a dollar to The Canopy Project, and they will plant a tree on your behalf.

    Save the Bees, Plant Wildflowers

Bees are an important part of our ecosystem, but unfortunately, the bee population is rapidly dwindling. Planting wildflowers can help save our bee population and ensure their survival. It is important to plant species that are native to our area to avoid spreading invasive species. Some easy species to plant for beginner gardeners are Bluebells, Scarlet Flax, California Poppy, or Mexican Evening Primrose. Native Seeds is a local business in Tucson that stocks desert wildflower seeds.

    Make an Impact

Another way to celebrate Earth Day is to make an impact on the environment by taking small steps to change your behavior. For example, by switching to electronic billing, also known as e-bill or paperless billing, your household can save up to 6 pounds of paper and 23 pounds of a wood a year. Riding your bike to work can reduce your carbon footprint. A 10-mile round trip bike to work uses no fuel while the average midsize car goes through 124 gallons of gas per year creating 1.3 tons of CO2 in emissions. Bring a reusable water bottle with you to reduce waste from a disposable plastic water bottle.

    Go Out and Celebrate

There are some great events to get involved in our beautiful state. Right here in Tucson is the annual Tucson Earth Day Festival and Parade! This free community event has been held since 1995. Besides the parade, there are always exciting things to do like live entertainment, hands-on activities for kids, and great food.

The nearby Kartchner Caverns at Kartchner Caverns State Park is holding a two-day Earth Day celebration on April 20th and 21st with live animals, crafts, presentations, and other interactive activities.

If you’re up for a drive, the Grand Canyon National Park will hold its Earth Day celebration which coincides with National Park Week fee-free day on Saturday, April 20th. The park will set up displays with information about the park’s conservation efforts.
