Moving during a Tucson Summer

The amount of dread that some people feel knowing that they have to move during a Tucson summer is almost comical.  The key to executing a successful move is all in the preparations that can be made beforehand. For anyone that is unfamiliar with Tucson, it is good to have some helpful tips to make your move as smooth as possible.

Be fully packed

Most people can acknowledge the fact that having everything packed before you start the physical moving part is the correct way to go about things.  However, you would be surprised by how many people choose to do a “pack-as-you-go” method instead. This is a complete waste of time – please don’t do this!  If you can buckle down and pack all of your belongings, then you will be able to make informed decisions when it comes to loading and unloading a moving truck.  This is also a great time to make an inventory list of everything that you are taking with you. For those of us that have low level OCD, it is also a chance to not only label the box by room, but perhaps by a number that will coincide with items on your inventory list.

Be aware of items that will melt

Anyone who has spent any time in Tucson knows that summer can bring the heat.  Be sure that any electronics, vinyl records or other valuable and pliable items are moved first and not kept in a hot moving truck waiting to be unpacked.  The same goes for makeup, lotions, shampoos and conditioners, soaps, etc. The last thing you will want to find when you open a box is that something has melted all over the place!

Make sure to have the power and water turned on at your new home

You will thank yourself for having the power and water turned on at your new home.  If you begin to get warm, there is nothing like splashing some cool water on your body to help you cool down, even if only momentarily.

Move during the cooler morning hours of the day

This is a no-brainer when you are faced with moving to a new home on a hot Tucson day.  Since you will already have everything packed and ready to go, but sure to start as early as possible.  The last thing you want to be doing is trying to move heavy furniture or boxes while the sun beats down on you and it’s over 100 degrees.

Wear breathable clothing and sunscreen

Moving in Tucson during the summer is not the time to wear sweatpants or sweatshirts.  You should wear breathable, loose clothing that will allow your skin to breathe and that won’t feel awful when you are sweating, because trust me – you will be sweating.  Sunscreen is also advised as you will be making several trips to and from a moving truck.  You should take care to reapply as often as is suggested on the directions of the particular sunscreen you have chosen.  Another thing to note is that when you are moving, you should not wear sandals, or anything open-toed. You will want to wear comfortable footwear that will protect you as much as possible.  When lifting heavy objects, there is always the chance that they will slip, particularly if you have chosen to forego hiring a professional moving company in Tucson, and have opted to bribe your friends and family with beer and pizza.

Hydrate!

Being sure to stay hydrated is important on any day, however, if you are moving in what some would call “extreme weather conditions” measuring in at over 100 degrees most days, then you will want to have plenty of cool water available to drink throughout the day.  As was mentioned before, having water turned on at your new home is very important to make sure you have access to drinkable water all day. If you usually drink 8 glasses of water a day, up it to 16 glasses for your move. Not only will the heat be a factor, but the physical exertion of moving will dehydrate you more quickly.

Portable Fans

Most residents in Tucson have a few portable fans laying around, but if you do not happen to own any, now is the time to either invest in a few or borrow a few from friends or family.  Even if your new home has air conditioning, you very likely will not be running it while your doors are open and you are hauling boxes and furniture into your new home. Having portable fans around your new home will help to give you a cooler breeze when you start to overheat.

Get rid of your kids for the day!

It is not always possible, but if you can farm your kids out for the day, you will be happy you did!  It is hard enough to keep on task with moving a whole house full of furniture, keepsakes and everyday items, but when you add kids into the mix, your stress level is likely to go through the roof!  If for some reason, that is not a possibility, perhaps you can put your kids in charge of packing their own belongings and moving small and light weight items.

Hire a local moving company in Tucson

Let’s face it – the professionals have the moving business down to a tee.  They know exactly how items should be packed and wrapped, loaded and unloaded, and they know how to move extremely efficiently.  You may move a few times in a lifetime, but the professionals at a moving company in Tucson will have moved hundreds, if not thousands of people homes.  They will not only know how to create an effective plan for your move, but they are also aware of the elements, and prepared for anything.
