Life is a journey. Move well.

How To: Declutter Your Home

When planning and packing before a move, movers often discover some items that are not worth taking to their new home or building. Whether they are old, a burden to move, or simply taking up space, movers tend to realize that some things they own should not make the final cut. Here are three options available if you need to get rid of some items before your next move.

Trash or Recycle Them

Some items are generally worth very little or just not worth the trouble to sell. Whether it is something like a very broken table or a collection of old magazines, throwing items in the trash is generally the easiest option available. If the items are not too large, you can simply throw them out with your trash. Some bigger or bulkier items might need special service to be taken away.

Of course, movers should ensure that items are properly disposed of or recycled to avoid polluting the environment. High-tech electronics like computers, laptops, cell phones, and printers all use special materials that can hurt the environment if they are left to degrade over long periods of time in landfills.  This pollution has been termed “e-waste.”

To avoid creating dangerous e-waste, many corporations, cities, and states have created ‘electronic take-back’ programs. To find out what services are available in your area, Google the manufacturer of your device to see if they have a ‘take-back’ program, and Google your own city to see if they have designated computer days to pick up your e-waste. Your local moving company can also help you learn about the best ways of throwing out or recycling unneeded items.

Sell Them

Many items still might have value to others. Even if you think the item isn’t worth much, people will pay money for just about anything, including things like old clothes or broken computers.

Items can be sold on websites like EBay and Craigslist, or on some similar service. If packaging certain things is not worth the trouble, you can always have a garage sale and have your neighbors come over to buy your unneeded items. If you have items that you no longer want, check to see if others will want to purchase them before tossing everything aside.

Donate Them

Most charities will take just about any item as long as it is not hazardous. If you have a couch, television, bedframe, or even smaller items you no longer want, consider donating them to a local charity so that they can be resold for less or even given to needy men and women. Rather than throwing them away, donating items can help make a difference in another person’s life.
