5 Things to Throw Away Before Moving

When it comes to moving house, one of the most challenging obstacles you face is deciding what to take with you, and what to leave behind. For some us, it can be difficult to part with our personal belongings, especially if they hold sentimental value. Nevertheless, downsizing is a necessary part of every move. After all, the less you take with you, the more you will save on your move.

At My Tucson Movers, we want your next move to be affordable and stress-free. Simplify your life and save money by throwing away these five items before you move.

Outdated Electronics

What do you do with that old VHS player or that broken laptop when it’s time to move? You certainly don’t want to bring them along, but throwing away electronics with the rest of your trash can be punishable by a fine.

Consider donating any personal computers, printers, televisions, phones, and other electronic devices to thrift stores like Goodwill or Savers. Most thrift stores and donation centers will accept electronics, as long as they are functional. For broken or damaged electronics, contact your nearest electronics recycling center for more details about how to properly dispose of these items.

Expired Items

Most people don’t even realize that beauty products can expire, but beauty products like makeup and scented lotions can actually lead to rashes and breakouts once they hit their expiration date. Go through your bathroom drawers and cabinets and check all medicines, hair products, lotions, makeup and perfumes for expiration dates.

When it comes to liquids, it is best to dispose of them all together as they can become a moving nightmare, if they leak or spill.

Clothes You No Longer Wear

Before you begin packing up your wardrobe, it is a good idea to go through your closet and separate anything that is damaged, no longer fits or that you no longer wear.

Consider donating or selling your old clothes. Try taking new, or gently used items to clothing consignment stores like Plato’s Closet or Buffalo Exchange or sell them online on websites like eBay for some extra income. Donate the rest of your clothing, shoes, and accessories to your nearest thrift store. Don’t forget to ask for receipts for tax-deduction purposes!

Old Media

Most of us have CDs, DVDs, video games, books or some other type of outdated media in our homes, collecting dust. But with the advent of technology and new media, we no longer have much use for these items,

If you’re looking for an easy way to make some extra cash, try listing these items on sites like Amazon, Craigslist or eBay. If you don’t have the time to do this, try donating them or giving them away to friends or family!

Your Junk Drawer

We are all familiar with the junk drawer. That one bottomless pit in our kitchen or nightstand that is filled to the brim with useless, random junk. Use your upcoming move an opportunity to clean out your junk drawer, once and for all.
